Why crypto going today as Bitcoin and altcoins rally

Crypto markets are rallying after U.S. Treasury buyback plans, a White House crypto summit, and spot Bitcoin ETF inflows sparked risk appetite. That is why crypto going today has traders asking if crypto winter is thawing: Bitcoin cleared $72,000, major altcoins jumped double digits, and global market cap rose about 6%.

Key Takeaways

Why is crypto going today?

The immediate lift came from several catalysts landing together. The U.S. Treasury said it would at least double long-term bond buybacks from $2 billion to $4 billion per operation starting in September, a step that helped pull down long-term yields and favor risk assets.

On August 19, Bitcoin closed near $68,380 after touching about $69,749, while Ethereum rose roughly 9% and XRP, Solana, and Dogecoin each gained about 13%. Total crypto market capitalization jumped above $2.32 trillion and later hovered near $2.35 trillion after a roughly 6% advance, according to MarketForces Africa.

Forced covering amplified the move: more than $1.9 billion in crypto positions were liquidated in 24 hours, including about $1.74 billion in shorts. U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs also saw $189.3 million in net inflows, led by BlackRock’s IBIT. Follow more market alerts on our Fintech & Crypto Alerts hub.

Is crypto winter really thawing?

Signs of a thaw are emerging, but the picture is mixed. By early Thursday, Bitcoin was above $72,000 for a second day, while ether, XRP, and HYPE were each up at least 20% over 24 hours, per Yahoo Finance.

Washington added fuel. President Donald Trump hosted crypto executives at a White House summit, urged Congress to pass a “fair version” of the CLARITY Act, and hinted the U.S. is considering buying “sizable” amounts of Bitcoin and other crypto. He also said CFTC Chair Mike Selig was working to bring DeFi platform Hyperliquid into the U.S. in a compliant way. The SEC separately proposed frameworks aimed at clearer digital-asset rules and token fundraising paths.

Still, traders are betting mainly on smaller regulatory wins this week even as perceived odds of the Clarity Act passing this year have dwindled—so a full exit from “crypto winter” is not locked in.

Can the rally keep going after overbought signals?

Technical gauges urge caution. As of August 20, XRP’s RSI sat near 84, Solana’s near 85, and Dogecoin’s near 79—deep overbought territory—while Bitcoin’s RSI rose above 70. Levels to watch include XRP support near $1.08, Solana’s $87 high, Dogecoin’s $0.073 support, and Bitcoin support around $66,000 with resistance near $72,200.

Bitcoin dominance was about 59.35% and the Fear & Greed Index sat at a neutral 53. Crypto-linked stocks Coinbase and Strategy were each more than 7% higher in recent trading. For now, follow-through buying and whether overbought altcoins cool will decide if this bounce becomes a lasting thaw.
