Across the road from the Jackson Ranch, Stacey had 30 head of cattle on ground where crews had previously logged and treated the forest to cut wildfire fuels. He said every animal walked out of the fire unscathed.

"I had 30 head of cattle and every one of them walked out of that fire, all unscathed," Stacey said. "That fire burnt slow and it burnt through there."

He credited ground-level burning with giving the cattle time to move. "It stayed on the ground, so it gave those cattle a chance to be able to get out of it," he said.

Crews first ran a commercial timber harvest to remove some larger trees. They then used masticators—heavy grinders on machinery—to break down smaller trees, brush, and other vegetation. Workers also created more space between remaining trees and pruned lower branches eight to 10 feet from the ground.

Those lower branches and smaller plants are often called ladder fuels because they can carry flames from grass and brush into the canopy. DNR's Sam Halvorsen said the goal was to keep fire out of the crowns and hold it on the ground at low intensity.

Before treatment, Halvorsen said the forest was overstocked, with vegetation close enough for fire to spread quickly. The project left larger trees about 30 to 35 feet apart, with younger trees spaced by an average of roughly 15 feet.

"By spacing out the trees, by opening the canopy, it stops the spread from crown to crown," Halvorsen said.

"That's the whole program, and it takes the conservation district and the DNR to work with us private landowners to get this accomplished," he said.

Community effort mattered as much as machinery. Stacey stayed in a Level 2 evacuation zone while helping care for the Jackson Ranch and neighboring properties. He cleared combustibles around a shop, helped extinguish spot fires, and worked with neighbors and family who cut fire lines with heavy equipment.

"If you won't take care of them, you can't expect anybody to come help you," Stacey said. "The community is great up here. People stand behind each other and help out when we need help."

As of his interview, he said no cattle had died in the Kaiser Canyon Fire. "We've come back. We're back there again," he said. "It's the resilience of the people up here — fight back and keep going on."
