Key Takeaways

What happened to Tara Grinstead?

Grinstead, a popular high school teacher and former beauty queen, was last seen leaving a friend’s cookout in 2005. Police found her phone, car, and dog at her home. Her keys and purse were missing, with no sign of a break-in or struggle.

The disappearance launched what the Tifton Gazette called the largest missing-person case in Georgia’s history. The trail went cold for more than a decade before new disclosures revived the probe.

Who was charged in the Tara Grinstead case?

In 2017, Brooke Sheridan told the Georgia Bureau of Investigation that her boyfriend, Bo Dukes, said he helped friend Ryan Duke dispose of Grinstead’s body after Duke killed her. Both men were former students in her history class.

Duke later confessed to breaking in to steal drug money, then striking Grinstead when she appeared. Both men admitted burning her body in a Ben Hill County pecan orchard. At his 2022 trial, Duke recanted and blamed Dukes.

Duke was convicted of concealing her death and sentenced to 10 years, but acquitted of malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, and burglary. Dukes was convicted in 2019 of covering up the killing and received 25 years. He was never charged with murder.

In February 2025, the Georgia Court of Appeals overturned Ryan Duke’s indictment and vacated cases against both men, ruling prosecutors missed a four-year charging window after probable cause existed.

Where can you watch the Dateline episode?

“The Orchard” features interviews with Sheridan, GBI’s Gary Rothwell, key witness John McCullough, Grinstead’s friend Maria Woods, podcaster Payne Lindsey, and others connected to the case.

If you missed the NBC broadcast, live-TV streamers that carry NBC—including Sling, YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV, and Fubo after a resolved carriage dispute—are the next-best options. Peacock streams Dateline the day after airtime; plans start around $8 a month, and no free trial is offered.

Why does the Tara Grinstead case still matter?

More than 20 years on, no one has been convicted of murdering Grinstead. Dateline’s revisit lands as Georgia courts reshaped the remaining charges—keeping public attention on a case that still defines true-crime intrigue in the South.
