Porsche's Taycan and more models could be on the chopping block

Porsche's Taycan and more models could be discontinued as Volkswagen Group prepares to cut its vehicle lineup by up to 50 percent. A German newspaper report names four Porsche nameplates—including the Taycan, Cayenne Coupe, and gas-powered next-gen 718 variants—as possible casualties of the parent company's cost-cutting strategy.

Key Takeaways

Why Could Porsche's Taycan and More Models Be Cut?

Volkswagen Group is preparing to slim down, and some Porsches may pay the price. Last week, the international auto conglomerate announced plans to gradually streamline its lineup of vehicles by up to 50 percent.

The company has not said which brands or models would be affected. For affluent buyers who treat performance cars as part of a broader luxury lifestyle—alongside high-end homes and dream garages—any Porsche cuts would reshape what lands in collectors' driveways.

Which Porsche Models Are Reportedly at Risk?

Over the week, German newspaper Bild, via Motor1.com, published a list of 10 VW Group vehicles that could be headed for the chopping block. Of those, four are made by Porsche: the Taycan, the Cayenne Coupe, and both gas-powered coupe and roadster versions of the next-generation 718.

The Taycan has earned critical praise and track records, but it has yet to catch on with Porsche's customer base. Over the first half of 2026, the electric sedan was outsold nearly five to one by the 911. The Cayenne Coupe, a more rakish take on Porsche's first SUV, is expected to end after its current generation.

The gas-powered next-gen 718 models come as more of a surprise. Porsche announced plans last year to build range-topping internal-combustion versions of the 718, which was initially billed as an exclusively battery-powered car. Bild made no mention of the electric Boxster and Cayman, suggesting those EV variants may survive.

What Did Porsche Say About the Report?

A Porsche spokesperson told Robb Report on Tuesday that they could not comment on the Bild report. They referred instead to a press release from last month, in which the automaker said it would present its Strategy 2035 road map at its Capital Markets Day event on October 7.

That timeline suggests answers may arrive soon. Until then, the report remains unconfirmed by Stuttgart.

Which Other VW Group Models Could Be Affected?

Beyond Porsche, the newspaper's list reportedly includes the VW Jetta and Taos, the Audi Q5 Sportback and Q6 e-tron Sportback, the Cupra Raval, and the Skoda Fabia. Bentley and Lamborghini were not named, which may indicate those luxury and supercar brands could be spared from the new strategy.
