GTA 6 updates: Everything new we learned this week

GTA updates everything new this week come from Game Informer's cover story: Leonida is Rockstar's biggest map yet—about twice GTA 5—with six regions, a player-driven Jason and Lucia bond, localized weather including hurricanes, and over 170 animal species before the Nov. 19 launch.

With Grand Theft Auto VI less than two months away, Rockstar Games is finally filling in major blanks. Mashable's roundup of Game Informer's Tuesday cover story pulls details from Rockstar leaders on the setting, systems, and how much of Florida is packed into Leonida.

For fans who grew up on Vice City and later Los Santos, this week's reveals read like a then-and-now leap: bigger world, denser interiors, and systems that feel closer to Red Dead Redemption 2 than classic open-world chaos.

Key Takeaways

What did we already know about GTA 6?

The core setup has been public for a while. Players switch between Jason and Lucia, a Bonnie-and-Clyde-style pair whose relationship you nurture or strain.

The story returns to Vice City, Rockstar's Miami stand-in, inside the fictional state of Leonida. Earlier coverage of Netflix's 27-minute extended look already flagged slow-motion aiming, a demon-head morality or honor indicator, and Red Dead-style NPC interactions.

Racing, base jumping, and a more detailed carjacking system were also on the record. Game Informer's feature adds a cast note: Stephen Root has said he voices Brian Heder, a veteran drug runner who assigns missions and lets Jason live rent-free in one of his properties.

How big is Leonida, and what regions are in the map?

Co-studio head Aaron Garbut told Game Informer Leonida is the largest world Rockstar has ever built. It is roughly twice the size of GTA 5's map and denser, with far more interiors. Garbut described Florida's appeal as "America dialed up to 11."

Game Informer confirmed six main regions: Vice City, Leonida Keyes, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia, and Mount Kalaga National Park.

Senior vice president of environment art Paul MacPherson said the team studied North Florida cities such as Jacksonville, Panama City, and Ocala. That stretch promises ATV trails, a mud park party, nighttime demolition derbies, farms, and bass fishing.

Do not bank on a Disney World parody. Asked about Orlando theme parks and the Space Coast, MacPherson stopped short of confirming them, saying the team narrowed which landmarks made the cut and suggesting those exact spots may not appear.

How does Jason and Lucia's relationship work?

The pair always stay partners. What is new is clearer player control: you decide whether they remain friends or become a romantic couple.

Game Informer reports the bond grows through missions and small gestures—holding hands, opening doors, answering calls and texts promptly, and accepting invitations to activities together.

Rockstar says neither path grants a gameplay advantage. Parts of the story still reflect the relationship's state, and bigger and smaller decisions can shift the narrative enough that Rockstar is encouraging multiple playthroughs.

Are hurricanes and wildlife really in the game?

Owen Shepherd, Rockstar's vice president of art for lighting and rendering, said weather has been rebuilt to be localized and persistent. You can stand in sunshine while a storm soaks the next neighborhood—a familiar Florida beat.

Rain leaves lasting puddles, rainbows can appear in the right light, and a new wind system moves hair, debris, water, and swamp grass. Tropical storms and hurricanes are confirmed. Rockstar has not said how often they hit or whether they change gameplay or story.

Vice president of dynamic art Michael Kane confirmed more than 170 animal species, including over 60 bird types and over 30 land mammals. Florida natives such as manatees, flamingos, pelicans, and alligators sit alongside invasive green iguanas, feral cats, cane toads, armadillos, and rhesus macaque monkeys.

Marine life includes sharks, whales, rays, sea turtles, and jellyfish, each with distinct movement. Some animals are trackable in Rare, Discoverable, and Legendary categories, echoing Red Dead Redemption.

NPCs also get an upgrade: varied height, body type, freckles, tattoos, and region-based fashion, with a Los Angeles team focused on NPC chatter.

Taken together, this week's Game Informer details push GTA 6 from trailer speculation toward a clearer picture of scale, weather, wildlife, and the Jason–Lucia story—just weeks before the Nov. 19 release.
