Casualty confirms Dylan Keogh's fate after iPlayer crash

Casualty has confirmed that Dylan Keogh survives the dramatic car crash cliffhanger now streaming early on BBC iPlayer. The Holby consultant is not the critically injured driver found at the three-vehicle collision scene. He returns to work, passes a breathalyser test, and pledges to tackle his alcoholism with AA meetings and therapy.

What happens to Dylan Keogh after the crash?

According to Digital Spy, Saturday's Casualty episode (18 July) is already on BBC iPlayer ahead of its BBC One broadcast. Spoilers below include alcoholism themes.

Dylan, a recovering alcoholic who relapsed and pushed loved ones away, parks outside a care home drinking from a clear bottle. He confronts his alcoholic father, Brian, blaming him for never being a good dad to Matty Linlaker. Brian does not recognise Dylan because of a worsening brain condition from years of drinking, then says his son was a runt he never loved.

Hurt, Dylan races out, drinks while driving dangerously, and leaves Matty a voicemail saying he is not like his own dad and that he cares. Matty and Stevie hear a crash at the end of the message. Emergency crews find a three-vehicle collision with an injured man who has spine, neck and head injuries — but it is not Dylan; the man has Dylan's jacket.

Matty is relieved his dad is uninjured. Flynn confronts Dylan over drink-driving. Dylan denies drinking since the initial relapse. Stevie works out that another patient accidentally caused the crash, and Dylan's breathalyser comes back clear.

Back at work, Dylan and Matty clash when Matty refuses to stop compressions on a patient who will not survive. Dylan later apologises, scared by how much he frightened his son, and pledges to do whatever it takes — including AA meetings and therapy — as the pair hug.

Why were fans so worried about Dylan's fate?

An earlier Casualty episode left Dylan's fate hanging. After Matty saw him drink champagne at a keynote event, Dylan's relapse became a night-long binge. He struggled at work, pushed Matty away, and left early. Matty told Stevie Nash that Dylan was drinking again. Stevie raced to Dylan's houseboat, only to learn he had already left. Viewers then saw him driving erratically with a bottle nearby.

Wales Online reported that fans who watched that cliffhanger were in tears, praising William Beck's performance and calling the episode incredible while worrying Dylan was in grave danger. Metro.co.uk likewise framed Stevie's desperate search and Dylan's dark turn as a major Holby storyline shift.
