Why does the Beyond frontman documentary matter now?
Wong Ka Kui, the late singer-songwriter who drove Beyond creatively, died in an accident in Japan in 1993 at age 31. His songs have continued to find new listeners in Hong Kong and among Cantonese-speaking audiences further afield.
Hong Kong director Rosa Pang revisits that legacy through interviews with people who knew Wong personally and through work. Rare concert recordings, never-before-shown early archive material, and previously unreleased footage follow him from his first brushes with music through Beyond's rise and his growth as a songwriter and performer.
The producers are Yip Sai Wing, one of Beyond's founding members, and Leslie Chan, the manager credited with finding the group. Pang and Chan described the film as a dedication to "a legend, an ordinary person," seeking to rediscover "the real Wong Ka Kui."
How did the film land its U.K. festival slot and distribution?
According to Variety, talks began in March at FilMart in Hong Kong, which U.K.-China Film Collab attended with the U.K. Film Pavilion.
The NGO used a similar approach last year with Robin Lee's Hong Kong documentary "Four Trails," which opened Odyssey and then played more widely in cinemas in 2025. Malaysian company Abnormal Studios launched "Because of You Ka Kui" internationally at FilMart as the lead title of its new international sales arm.

When and where can U.K. audiences see it?
The sixth Odyssey Film Festival runs Sept. 28–Oct. 10 at a number of cinemas as well as online. Each edition has a different theme; this year's is #Fashion.
Hiu Man Chan, Odyssey's artistic director and founder of U.K.-China Film Collab, said Beyond "did not simply follow the fashion of their generation" and in many ways helped create it, "like Oasis for the U.K." She called bringing the film to the U.K. "my true honor."
There is also a U.K. production link: the interview with Beyond founding member William Tang was shot in London. The festival's opening and some of its program have backing from the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in London.
Pang said the film is "not about nostalgia," arguing Wong's honesty in what he thought, felt, and believed still resonates. Leslie Chan said that after hearing the interviews, he felt he came to know Ka Kui all over again.
